Material Science

University of Oxford

About the course

The Materials Science course is an interdisciplinary program that integrates aspects of physics, chemistry, and engineering to study the properties, structure, and applications of materials. The curriculum covers a wide range of materials including metals, alloys, ceramics, polymers, composites, and biomaterials. Students examine the mechanical, electrical, magnetic, and optical properties of these materials, as well as their manufacturing processes. The program includes laboratory work and covers applications in various fields such as nanotechnology, quantum computing, energy storage, and medical technologies. Additional components of the course include an introduction to entrepreneurship and an option to study a foreign language.

A key feature of the program is the fourth-year research project, which spans eight months. During this period, students conduct full-time research, typically within the Department of Materials at Oxford, with occasional opportunities for placements in overseas universities or industrial laboratories. This project aims to develop skills in problem-solving, experimental design, project management, and scientific communication.
